In 1907, the first woman doctor in Italy, an innovator, a pioneer and scientist, Maria Montessori opened a small school in the San Lorenzo quarter, a slum quarter in the city of Rome, Italy. The event, to all appearances, was an ordinary happening, but Dr. Montessori thought the occasion an auspicious one; quoting scripture, she declaimed that the world would soon take note of the event. Her words were prophetic. Nearly one hundred years later, there are Montessori schools all over the world and the method she invented continues to grow exponentially.

Dr. Montessori combined in her the innocence and optimism of the 19th Century, the passionate nature of her native Italy, the scientific temper of the early 20th and a millennial missionary zeal to communicate her vision. The first woman doctor of Italy, she was also a professor of anthropology. By training, she was both an observer of life and a physician dedicating to healing. She brought these prodigious qualities and accomplishments to the education of children.

Children couldn’t have asked for a more efficacious advocate. She started the first training course in 1929 and subsequently traveled all over the world setting up training courses. Throughout her life she toiled terribly, writing numerous books on her method, speaking out for the rights of children, and holding forth on the special role children play in establishing peace and goodwill in the world.

Heralded by statesmen, thinkers, and scientists all over the world, she nevertheless had her intellectual and political detractors. The courage of her convictions saw the Method through the intellectual and political upheavals of the 20th Century. Dr. Montessori died in 1952, but the method that bears her name is now an enduring legacy.

Dr. Montessori asks trainees in her method “to know, love, and serve” children. Today, Children in Montessori schools are privileged to live and learn from the discoveries and achievements of a great soul who made it her life’s mission to work and speak on their behalf.
